The Amphitheatre is in the northern section of the Drakensberg (approximately 3 hrs drive from Durban & 3.5-4hrs from JHB). This hike is undoubtedly the most accessible way to the very top of the Drakensberg escarpment (via the famous chain ladders), and the views from the top are spectacular. The Tugela Falls runs over this escarpment (at 850m it is reputably the 2nd highest waterfall in the world).

The arrival night on the trail is spent at the Cavern Berg hotel ( The accommodation on the 2nd & 3rd night is at the Mountain Lodge – the only lodge this high up the Drakensberg escarpment and perfectly located for this slackpacking trail – meaning you can get to the very top of the Drakensberg escarpment – without having to sleep in your own tent or cave...normally the only way for high berg hikes such as this.

By spending 3 days and 3 nights on the route, staying at conveniently located lodges along the way, and accompanied by an experienced trail guide, it is possible for anyone who is reasonably fit to summit the escarpment. This hike has been planned so that you can walk at a comfortable pace and not be encumbered by a heavy backpack.

On this trail, you'll do 40 kilometres over 3 days of hiking with an altitude gain of 1300m, so it is not a hike for the faint-hearted, but the views are worth every drop of sweat.
