The Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve is a privately-owned game reserve spanning some 1600 hectares and boasts over 650 head of game and several endangered species.

If you prefer to do things at your own pace, then the self-drive is for you. A pack of African wild dogs, a pride of lion, a dazzle of zebra - you never know what you might come across when you explore the vast expanse of land that makes up the reserve. Just make sure you adhere to the basic rules - stay in your vehicles at all times and stick to the established roads.

  • Please make sure to use "Bothongo" Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve on your navigation system. If not, you will be routed to old entrance and you'll need to drive on for a further minute or so to main gate.

  • Food is not included, however we have a variety of restaurants on the reserve


Lion, Cheetah and African Wild Dog feeding

  • Feedings take place at the Predator Camp @ 13h00 on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.

Wildlife Centre

  • You can visit the Wildlife Centre at the Day Visitor's Centre between 09h00 and 16h00 each day.

Live Reptile Show

  • Shows are held at the Day Visitor's Centre @ 14h30 every day except on Mondays and Fridays

Neck & Deck Restaurant

  • Situated close to the main gate
  • Hours: 07h00 - 16h00 (Monday to Sunday)

The Thatch Cafe

  • Can be found next to the Cradle Bike Park
  • Hours: 08h00 - 16h00 (Tuesday to Sunday)
  •             08h00 - 17h00 (Weekends & Public Holidays)

The Boma Restaurant

  • Next to the Wildlife Centre
  • Hours: 08h00 - 17h00 (Tuesday to Sunday)

Do's

  • Do stay in your vehicle at all times & keep your windows closed.
  • Do drive slowly and cautiously (less than 35 km/h).
  • Do give the animals space.
  • Do keep your litter in your car until you find a dustbin.
  • Do take note of opening and closing hours.
  • Do keep your ticket handy, as you may be asked to produce it at any time.

Dont's

  • Don't throw cigarette butts on the ground.
  • Don't bring in restricted items (animals, weapons, traps, poisons and drones).
  • Don't stay overnight if you have not made a booking.
  • Don't play music or cause a disturbance.
  • Don't leave the road.

    • Notification of cancellations must be received by the Reserve in writing no later than one (1) calendar month prior to arrival. 
    • Telephonic cancellations will not be accepted. Failure to comply will result in the following penalties:
    • Cancellation 30+ days prior to date of arrival: 90% Refund
    • Cancellation between 29 and 20 days prior to date of arrival: 50% Refund
    • Cancellation less than 20 days prior to date of arrival: NO REFUND


    REFUNDS:

    • No refunds will be made on any changes made on the day of the booking.
    • Any changes made will be charged for additionally.
    • No refunds will be given on any changes less than the value of the booking on the day.
    • No refunds also implies that in the event where fewer persons arrive on the day for the booking that the difference in value can be used for any other events on the day. These monies will be forfeited.

    • Infant: 0 - 3 years 
    • Child: 4 - 17 years 
    • Senior: Over 60 years
    • Reserve gates open at 08h00 and close at 17h00. No activities may be scheduled for later than 17h00 unless prior arrangements have been made. 
    • All rules, regulations, and standard trading conditions of the Reserve apply to visitors taking part in any of the activities or making use of any of the services detailed above.
    • Indemnity: Every person enters the Reserve at his/her own risk. The owner, management and employees are not responsible for any damage, injury or loss of any nature sustained by a visitor, guest, contractor or any other person and/or their property.
