Heritage Protected Windybrow House
We kick off the day by starting at the Windybrow Heritage house. Celebrating 123 years of existence this year, Windybrow House, is a heritage protected mansion, located in the city centre's infamous neighbourhood, Hillbrow. This neighbourhood used to be a cosmopolitan hub, where people from different cultural backgrounds would come together for both business and leisure. This experience is a great introduction into understanding the history of Johannesburg.
An urban regeneration programme is underway. There are street markets, mainly used by local residents, and the Windybrow Heritage House is very much assisting in re-generating the neighbourhood.
Maker's Valley
Cleanse your body with a deliciously fresh juice from an urban farm located in Maker's Valley. Meet the lady behind this urban farm initiative putting food on the table for many locals. The people who live and work in Makers Valley are diverse in many ways including socio-economic status, ethnicity, and religion. Most residents are economically challenged, and many without employment. However, visible urban decay and associated social ills are balanced by pockets of vibrant business development, in both the formal and informal sectors.
Changemaking is a core principle that governs the many activities. The vision is that the entrepreneurial activities of the growing numbers of ‘Makers’ in the Valley will generate a localised and sustainable economy, ultimately improving the livelihoods of many.
Victoria Yard
Meet exceptional visual artists, visit artisan workshops and get ready to be impressed. Art & fashion are available for sale.
Through building an eco-system where tenants thrive as a community, Victoria Yards presents a uniquely integrated urban complex that is as much about social development as it is business. An expansive urban farm lines it's pathways. The pathways are filled with pop-up like stalls that offer everything from jewellery design and furniture making to fashion, craft beer and baking. You can also look forward to a farmer’s market filled with organic produce from Victoria Yards' lush gardens.
Maboneng & Marshalltown
David Beckham was seen here and Forbes magazine rated it as one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world. There's every reason for Maboneng's world recognition.
Learn about the epic street art initiative and visit its cultural attractions like the Museum of African Design, Arts on Main—a complex that was previously a series of dilapidated buildings and now has many cool galleries, restaurants and boutiques.
Up next is a walking tour of Marshalltown. We take a break at a downtown lunch spot.

Constitutional Hill & Braamfontein
There is perhaps no other site of incarceration in South Africa that imprisoned the sheer number of world-renowned men and women as those held within the walls of Constitution Hill’s prison cells. The site is a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional court which endorses the rights of all citizens.
This tour comes to a powerful end. We guarantee a new perspective on your own country. Join us on a beautiful journey down Joburg's dramatic history.
