The Island lies off the northern part of Mozambique, between the Mozambique Channel and Mossuril Bay. It is part of the Nampula Province. The region’s major economic contributor is cotton and is known as the “Cotton Belt of Napula”. The island is the oldest European settlement in East Arica, so, expect some old building structures on your vacation there.

The island was the capital of colonial Portuguese East Africa before 1898. With its rich history and sandy beaches, it forms part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Heritage Site.

The islands name is derived from Ali Musa Mbiki, sultan of the island in the times of Vasco da Gama. Its original inhabitants came from Kilwa and spoke Swahili. Today, the urbanised island is home to several mosques and a Hindu temple. The island isn’t long, and is connected to the mainland by a bridge.

Take a trip down memory lane to the Palace of Sao Paulo, which was built in 1610 as a Jesuit College. The Palace was once a Governor’s Residence and has since become a museum.
