The North West forms part of the 9 provinces in South Africa. The provinces capital is Mahikeng.It is situated on the west of the major populated centre of Gauteng. It was incorporated after the end of Apartheid in 1994 and includes parts of the former Transvaal provinces and Cape provinces, as well as most of the former Bantustan of Bophuthatswana. When cross-province municipalities were abolished, the province was the epicentre of political violence in Khutsong and Merafong City Local Municipality in 2006 and 2007. The violence resulted with the transfer of Merafong Municipality to the Gauteng province in 2009.
The province is the birth place of prominent political figures such as, Ahmed Kathrada, Lucas Mangope and Moses Kotane, to name a few.
