The place of gold, formally known as Gauteng forms part of the 9 provinces in South Africa. This destination, is locally known as the city where “dreams come true”. The provinces name is translated to “place of gold” in Sotho and Tswana.It is the smallest province in South Africa. It contains the country’s largest city, Johannesburg., with its administrative capital being Pretoria.

Prior to the landmark elections that took place in 1994, the province was initially named Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging (PWV). It was renamed “Gauteng” in December 1994. The province was part of the old Transvaal Province. The province has a rich history that can be traced back to the early 19th century, when settlers originating from the Cape Colony defeated chief Mzilikazi and started establishing villages in the area. Travellers are encouraged to take a trip to the Sterkfontein Caves, where some of the oldest fossils of hominids have been discovered.

After the discovery of gold in 1886, the region became the single largest gold producer in the world. Due to the gold rush, the city of Johannesburg was formed.The largest diamond ever mined was the Cullinan Diamond, in a town called Cullinan near Pretoria in the 1905.

The Gauteng province was the epicentre of many crucial events and demonstrations in the country, which can be viewed at the Apartheid Museum. Gold Reef City Theme Park, is an amusement park, which boasts in various rides and a casino experience for locals and tourists. Take a trip to the Nelson Mandela National Museum to learn about the country’s former beloved president.Voortrekker Monument is a monument which was built to commemorate the voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854.
